Optimizing Research Platforms: A Look Back at the IPTICAR Study Visit to Italy
As part of the initiative to boost Euro-Algerian scientific cooperation (Component 4), the IPTICAR project organized an immersive study visit to Italy from June 21 to 26, 2026. This mission, conducted under Activity 4.2, focused on a major objective: training Algerian technicians and engineers in the optimization and management of research platforms.
A Clear Objective: Strengthening Technical and Administrative Capacities The methodological approach of this visit relied on direct experience exchange between Italian and Algerian technicians. The selected technological research themes were carefully aligned with Algerian strategic priorities to enhance partnership efficiency according to EU standards.
The main objective was two-fold:
Improve the technical and administrative capacities of Algerian research platform staff.
Increase partnership efficiency to align with European Union standards and competencies.
To ensure the success of this mission, the Algerian delegation comprised 6 to 8 participants (including MESRS representatives, technicians, and administrative staff from research platforms), supported by a linguistic assistant. All travel, accommodation, and logistical expenses were fully covered by the IPTICAR project.
Immersion in the Heart of Tuscan Scientific Excellence The dense program allowed the delegation to explore key scientific hubs in the Tuscany region, a core partner of the IPTICAR project. This territorial coverage offered a comprehensive overview of ongoing innovations:
University of Florence (Florence and Calenzano): The visit began with an exploration of the laboratories of the Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Forestry Sciences and Technologies (DAGRI). Participants then visited the LINEA Lab (Energy Innovation) and the THT Lab, specialized in High-Temperature Technologies for industrial engineering.
University of Siena (Santa Chiara Lab and Biotechnological Pole): Focus was placed on sustainable agriculture and food innovation through the FUSTO pathway (soilless farming, hydroponics, aeroponics). Researchers also toured the Agritech and Metrofood laboratories (molecular biology, origin tracking, packaging, biochemistry, and renewable energy).
University of Pisa (Navacchio Pole): The delegation was welcomed at the Contamination Lab, recognized at the European level for its excellence in entrepreneurship education, fostering connections between research and business creation.
PIN Foundation (Prato): A day dedicated to cutting-edge engineering featuring the CRIACIV wind tunnel (construction testing), the LATI lab (information technology applications), Perclab (Metaverse and virtual reality applications), and MONAMUR Lab, specialized in monitoring natural, urban, and industrial environments.
National Research Council - CNR (Sesto Fiorentino): The mission concluded with high-level visits to the National Institute of Optics (INO-CNR) and the Institute for Applied Physics (IFAC-CNR).
Sustainable Impact and Promising Outlook Beyond technical capacity building, choosing the Tuscany region helped establish solid scientific and personal connections between teams, creating fertile ground for future collaborations.
